TI-84 vs. TI-Nspire vs. Casio: Which Graphing Calculator Should You Actually Buy?

Casio fx-9750GIII / fx-9860GII The Budget Pick That Doesn't Feel Like One

I'll be honest, Casio doesn't get talked about nearly as much in American classrooms, mostly because TI has such a strong foothold in U.S. schools. But if you're paying out of pocket and want to save money without actually sacrificing functionality, the Casio line is worth a serious look.

The Casio fx-9750GIII costs significantly less than TI models often around half the price of a TI-84 while still carrying strong customer ratings and a feature set that covers far more than basic graphing, including a natural textbook display and MicroPython programming. It handles the same core tasks: graphing functions, running regressions, working with matrices, and plotting statistical data.

The trade-off: the interface isn't quite as intuitive as TI's menu system if you've never used one before, and because fewer U.S. teachers use Casio day-to-day, you may get less in-class troubleshooting help. That said, it's still fully approved for SAT, ACT, and most standardized tests, so it's not a compromise on exam day just a slightly different learning curve.

Best for: budget-conscious families, students who want solid functionality without the TI price tag, and anyone who doesn't mind a short adjustment period learning a different menu layout.

HP Prime The Underdog Worth Knowing About

You won't see this one in many classrooms, but it comes up often enough to be worth a mention. The HP Prime has a touchscreen interface and genuinely capable CAS functionality that some engineering students and professionals prefer over the Nspire CAS.

The catch is the same one that applies to any CAS device: it's banned outright from the SAT and ACT, same as the TI-Nspire CAS and TI-89. Prohibited calculators for these exams explicitly include the HP Prime, HP 48GII, and all model numbers beginning with HP40G, HP49G, or HP50G.

Best for: college and professional-level STEM work where CAS is expected and allowed, not standardized testing.

Think about it in this order:

  1. Check your teacher's or school's requirement first. Many classrooms are built entirely around one model, and having the same calculator as your classmates means you can actually follow along with keystroke instructions during a lesson.

  2. Check your exam's calculator policy next, especially if you're anywhere near SAT, ACT, or AP season. Don't assume verify directly with the College Board's official calculator policy or ACT's calculator policy page.

  3. If neither applies and you're choosing freely, go TI-84 Plus CE for most students, Casio fx-9750GIII if budget is the priority, and TI-Nspire CX II CAS only if you know for certain your coursework calls for it.
